Windows Family History Library Catalog

The Windows CD version of the Family History Library Catalog describes the library's collection of family history materials, which consist of over 2.5 million microforms and 300,000 books. It adds searches by keyword, title, author, and call number to the place, surname, subject, and film number searches. It also lets users mark information for fast future retrieval and maintains a history of records reviewed during each search.

The online version is at Family History Library Catalog.

Client Configuration

The FHLC can only access data via a mapped drive, there are no registry settings for a UNC path. An association must be created between a local or remote data folder and an unused drive, e.g. drive K: is mapped to \\server\fhlc.

When the FHLC is opened on the client it will automatically search for the R1 folder.

Q & A

Q: Does FHLC allow you to search for computer numbers?

A: The Computer Number search referenced the computer record numbers in the old cataloging system used by catalogers at the Family History Library. It was a substitute for the non-existent title search. In 1998 the old cataloging system was replaced and the new system does not have the old computer numbers. The current version of FHLC does have Title search, and soon so will the Internet catalog. – Steve Fox

Q: Should Family History Center's replace FHLC ver 17 & 18 (DOS) with the windows version?

A: If a center can run the windows version, they should discontinue use of 17 & 18. If they can't, both ver 17 & 18 are needed because of entries in 17 that were not included in 18. – Steve Fox

Q: What is the most current source for FHLC entries?

A: The familysearch.org internet version was extracted in September 2000 and is the most current Family History Library catalog (it will continue to be the most current source). The windows version is current as of March 2000. Version 18 was current as of December 1999 (has some missing entries). Version 17 was current as of April
1997. – Steve Fox

Q: Are the records that were missing in version 18 included in the windows and internet version?

A: Yes. – Steve Fox

Q: Does the windows version offer anything more than the familysearch.org internet version?

A: Yes, it allows for Keyword and Title searches. The internet version will shortly have Title search. – Steve Fox
