FS 2.27 on Windows 2000

FamilySearch 2.27 can be installed on Windows 2000 by following the normal setup procedure.

The procedure for substituting local drives must be modified since Windows 2000 does not support a conventional auotexec.bat like W9x. Three alternatives are:

  1. create a *.bat file to substitute drives in the Windows Startup folder;

  2. store startup commands in \windows\system32\Autoexec.nt;

  3. use the drive substitution utility, vSubst, to create permanent substitutions.

FS must be run with the full screen display option to retain the normal text and background colors.

Ben Winkler has provided the following information regarding memory usage.

The Expanded memory (EMS) verification procedure below is designed for a standard installation of W2K, but should work on all W2K machines (maybe with slight variations.)

  1. Open the \WINNT\System32 folder.

  2. Maximize this window, then Click the word "View" on the Menu Bar, and "Details" from the drop-down menu. At the top of the third column, Click on the gray button that is labeled "Type". Then, scroll down until you find a group of files listed as DOS Applications in the "Type" column. Choose any one of these files to work with.

  3. Right-Click the selected file. This will bring up the Object or "Shortcut" Menu. At the bottom of the Short-cut menu, click on the word "Properties". This will open the Properties Dialog Box for that file. At the top of the Properties Dialog Box, Click on the Memory Tab.

  4. In this tab there should be four boxes, labeled from top to bottom; Conventional memory, Expanded (EMS) memory, Extended (XMS) memory, and DOS protected-mode (DPMI) memory. If the EMS box is blank or contains a message about expanded memory being disabled, additional steps are necessary before the system will run FamilySearch. If there is a drop-down list in the box it may have the word "None" in it. This does not disqualify this machine if it can be changed to "Auto" or some numerical value equal to or higher than 1024. DO NOT change it here, but you will probably have to tweak it for the FS executable file once it is installed.

After using this procedure, be sure to use the "Cancel" button to close the open dialog boxes. This will prevent you from accidentally changing any properties.
