Intranet Web Server

The Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS) is a basic web server designed for intranet use. It can be installed from the Windows 98 CD and is available for Windows 9x/Me and the NT workstation through the Windows NT Option Pack. Note: Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Q214644 to obtain an updated version of mtssetup.dll before installing PWS.

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional users should install the Internet Information Services (IIS) server that is included with the OS instead of PWS. Note: The installation of IIS may expose the system to increased security vulnerabilities; all unnecessary services, e.g. FTP, SMTP, should be disabled and all critical patches should be installed. This site contains more detailed information on IIS installation and configuration.

PWS Main Screen

The main screen of the PWS Manager displays basic server status, statistics, and a toolbar for other Manager screens.

PWS
Advanced Screen

The advanced screen enables you to specify the association between the Server's Virtual Directories, e.g. the server <Home> directory, and physical directories on the server, e.g. d:\Inetpub\wwwroot, where the web content is stored.
